A catheterization laboratory or Cath Lab is an examination room in a hospital with diagnostic imaging equipment used to visualize the arteries of the heart and the chambers of the heart and treat any stenosis or abnormality found. We have a digital Cath Lab which are superior to the conventional angiogram. These advanced systems aid both diagnostic and interventional procedures on patients in all age groups.
The cath lab provides many services like, Coronary angiography or coronary catheterisation, Coronary angioplasty or percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI), Closure of some congenital heart defects, Treatment of stenotic heart valves, Permanent and temporary pacemaker implantations, Electrophysiological studies such as AV node ablation, Rotablation of heavily calcified vessels Left and right-sided pressure studies
Interventional Cardiology procedures are minimally invasive and offer patients a number of benefits such as decreased pain, less risk of infection, smaller scars and shorter post procedure recovery time. In most instances, the procedures are performed under local anaesthesia and the patient remains awake while undergoing it. Some procedures are even performed on an outpatient basis, allowing patients to go home within hours of the procedure.
Most centres perform interventional procedures using the femoral artery; however, specialists access the heart through the radial artery in most cases, which reduces the risk of bleeding and is more comfortable for patients.
